My guest today is one half of the husband-and-wife filmmaking team Jared and Jerusha Hess, the dynamic duo who gave us Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre, Austenland and many more.
They have entered the Academy Awards race with Ninety-Five Senses — a short film that is a heartfelt tribute to the bodily experience, delivered by a death row inmate with limited time to enjoy it. This short film marks the Hesses’ first foray into animation, and heads into the Oscar season being Oscar Shortlisted.
Actor Tim Blake Nelson, known his roles in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou? and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs as well as his recurring turn as The Leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lent his voice to the main character, Coy — a folksy philosopher facing his own mortality. As Coy bids a final farewell to each of his five senses, he reflects on his troubled past and dreams of a vibrant, multi-sensory afterlife.
Ladies and gentlemen, the beauty of this film Ninety-Five Senses cannot be overlooked, Academy members this deserves your vote. As for my viewers and listeners, don’t ignore the power of your five senses.
Look up and see passed your smartphone. Walk in the forest or a garden and smell nature. Give a gentle touch to someone who needs some encouragement and there is a culinary world out there waiting on you to explore. Thank you Jerusha for sharing your Oscar Shortlist short film with us today and good luck! #oscars #shortfilm #animation #timblakenelson #napoleondynamite #nacholibre #austenland #mastprogram #Utah #filmmaker #filmmaking #filmdirector #filmproduction #screenwriter #screenwriting #filmfestival #sundancefilmfestival

Their short film, Knight of Fortune is about the loss of a loved one, the grief, and a coffin, that is too much for the main character Karl to face. Karl meets a gentleman, Torben - a destined brother. Directed and written by Nazrin Choudhury, this short drama features emotionally precise writing, a perceptive, even poetic eye in the directing and a muted and somber visual naturalism fitting the financial and emotional struggles of the characters it portrays.
That resilience and fortitude form the emotional core of "Red, White and Blue," especially when the deceptively spare, quiet tenor of its storytelling belies a powerful revelation near the film's end.
In many ways, the revelation takes advantage of the uncomfortable silence surrounding the narrative's subject matter, only to pull back the curtain, deftly reveal the true stakes of the narrative and provoke thought about the larger circumstances that have shaped the story beyond the screen.
It's a bold, devastating final stroke in the storytelling, one that guarantees the film will haunt viewers well after its conclusion.

The hotly anticipated quirky short film takes you on the lighthearted journey of a desperate young man and his mother in his old VW van, a dead pigeon in the passenger seat, and a growing sense of desperation.
‘GOOD BOY’ is the debut in the director’s chair for Tom Stuart. The comedy-drama stars three-time BAFTA-winner Ben Whishaw as you may recognize as Q from the movie Skyfall and two-time SAG award-winner Marion Bailey from Netflix’s THE CROWN.

Our guest today is the legendary acting coach and film director, and founder of the Creative Center for the Arts and the Los Angeles Acting Conservatory, Michelle Danner.
Her new film, “Miranda’s Victim,” has an all-star cast with Abigail Breslin, Luke Wilson, Ryan Phillippe, Andy Garcia and Donald Sutherland just to name a few.
The film tells the true story of Trish Weir played by Abigail Breslin, who was kidnapped and raped by Ernesto Miranda. Leading to the creation of the Miranda Rights.
In the beginning, I mentioned that Michelle Danner is one of Hollywood’s top acting coaches and has worked privately with Salma Hayek, Gerard Butler, Seth MacFarlane, Penelope Cruz, and more. How’s that for A-list talent.
Michelle was a longtime student of legendary acting teachers like Stella Adler and Uta Hagen. Michelle’s eclectic approach (which she calls “The Golden Box”) allows actors the freedom to employ a wide variety of techniques.
Ladies and gentlemen, the feature film, MIRANDA’S VICTIM is about the most famous rape case in American history - that led to one of the most influential Supreme Court decisions in the modern era.
But few people know the real story behind the "Miranda Rights," and the profound suffering and bravery of one woman whose pursuit of justice changed America forever.
Now from director Michelle Danner comes MIRANDA'S VICTIM, which tells the story of Patricia Weir, who as a teenager was kidnapped and raped by Ernesto Miranda as she returned home from her job. It was the early 1960s, when rape victims were often shamed into silence and legal recourse seemed impossible, but Patricia bravely stood up and helped bring her assailant to justice.
However, Ernesto Miranda was also considered a victim - of sloppy police work, and a failure by well-intentioned law enforcement officers to inform him of his legal rights. His case eventually gets to the Supreme Court, who order Miranda's release based on this now-critical technicality.
MIRANDA’S VICTIM is a must-see film that is emotional and shows what one endures and how lawyers will twist the words of those who have been traumatized by sexual assault, and then verbally assault them on the stand.
Patricia Weir is a hero and if you have ever been a victim of sexual assault, call 1-800-656-4673, a 24/7 hotline. Don’t live in silence. Those who are victims of sexual assault feel like they are living with a death sentence of guilt, shame and in some cases personal blame. And you don’t have too, again call 1-800-656-4673 for help. #newmovie #newfilm #filmmaker #filmdirector #featurefilm #supremecourt #actor #lukewilson #ryanphilippe #abigailbreslin #donaldsutherland #courtdrama #drama #screenwriter #mirandarights
